Wheat prices have recorded a sharp increase across Punjab and Islamabad over the last ten days, rising by nearly 30 percent amid growing supply concerns.
According to market data, wheat that was previously selling at around Rs. 3,700 per maund is now being traded at prices ranging between Rs. 4,400 and Rs. 4,800 per maund in several regions. The steep rise has added pressure to household food costs, particularly in urban centers.
In southern Punjab, wheat prices have reached approximately Rs. 4,450 per maund in Multan, while rates in Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan have climbed to around Rs. 4,400 per maund. Islamabad has also seen prices rise to nearly Rs. 4,400 per maund.
Lahore has witnessed a similar trend, with wheat being sold at about Rs. 4,450 per maund. The city is also facing a shortage of flour bags, with traders reporting limited availability of 10-kg and 20-kg packs. As a result, the price of a 15-kg flour bag has increased from Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 1,750.
In Gujranwala and Gujrat, wheat prices have surged to as high as Rs. 4,500 per maund, while Rawalpindi has recorded the steepest hike, with rates touching Rs. 4,800 per maund.
Central Chairman of the Flour Mills Association, Asim Raza, attributed the price hike to a rapidly shrinking wheat supply. He warned that diminishing stocks are directly fueling higher flour prices and could further strain the market if the situation persists.
