The Punjab government has introduced a new policy for government vehicles, banning the purchase of petrol and diesel-powered cars by provincial departments in a move aimed at promoting environment-friendly transport.

Under the new decision, government departments will now be allowed to purchase only electric or hybrid vehicles. However, vehicles required for field operations have been exempted from this restriction to ensure that essential services are not disrupted.

As part of the policy, the provincial government has also linked the approval of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for new petrol pumps to the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging units. Authorities will issue approval for any new petrol pump only after an EV charging facility has been installed.

Officials clarified that no newly approved petrol pump will be allowed to operate without an electric charging unit, ensuring wider availability of EV infrastructure across the province.

Speaking on the matter, the Chief Secretary Punjab said that the promotion of green energy remains a top priority for environmental protection. He confirmed that the province will soon roll out a comprehensive electric vehicle policy to further support the transition toward clean energy.

According to official data, authorities have already issued NOCs for 170 new petrol pumps across 31 cities through the e-Biz Portal. The city-wise distribution includes 29 petrol pumps in Faisalabad, 14 in Lahore, 10 in Bahawalpur, and nine each in Khanewal and Bahawalnagar.

The Punjab government has made it mandatory for all newly approved petrol pumps to install electric charging units, aiming to encourage the use of eco-friendly transport and reduce carbon emissions across the province.
