Peshawar, Jan 1, 2026: The Peshawar administration has launched a major initiative to regulate private taxis across the city. Authorities have made it mandatory for all private taxi operators to register their vehicles with the Excise Department. Along with registration, taxis will now feature a standardized color scheme and QR-code stickers to enhance passenger safety and streamline city transport.
During a high-level meeting chaired by Riaz Khan Mahsud, head of the Regional Transport Authority, officials reviewed the current traffic situation and public transport operations in Peshawar. They decided to take strict action against illegal transport services, resulting in the closure of over 100 unauthorized taxis, rickshaws, and speed stations. Contractors running these services will face legal action, including fines and possible arrests.
To improve traffic flow, the administration also announced the closure of unnecessary U-turns on Charsadda and Kohat roads and relocation of BRT stations that cause congestion. Joint teams, including traffic police, assistant commissioners, and transport officials, have been tasked with monitoring illegal vehicles and enforcing the new rules along the BRT corridor.
Additionally, restrictions have been imposed on trucks, tractor trolleys, and other freight vehicles from entering major city roads before 10:00 pm. Roadside check posts will be moved to open areas to avoid traffic bottlenecks and ensure smoother travel for commuters.
Officials say these measures aim to make Peshawar’s transport system safer, more organized, and more efficient for everyone.
