Pakistan is said to be close to finalizing a major defense export agreement with Sudan, valued at approximately $1.5 billion, according to multiple sources familiar with the negotiations. The proposed deal would mark one of Pakistan’s largest recent military export packages and includes a mix of aircraft, drones, and air-defense systems.

Officials briefed on the matter say the defense package is expected to feature Karakoram-8 (K-8) light attack aircraft, along with more than 200 drones designed for surveillance and loitering strike missions. Advanced air-defense equipment is also believed to be part of the proposed agreement, aimed at strengthening Sudan’s aerial security capabilities.

The potential deal comes at a critical time for Sudan, where the armed forces have been engaged in a prolonged conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The fighting has severely impacted civilian life and triggered a humanitarian crisis, while also drawing growing international attention due to Sudan’s strategic location near the Red Sea and its significant natural resources, including gold.

Defense analysts note that the addition of drones and light combat aircraft could significantly enhance Sudan’s operational capacity, particularly as unmanned systems have increasingly shaped the battlefield. The Sudanese military has accused the RSF of receiving external backing, including drone support, allegations that have been denied by those named.

Retired Pakistan Air Force Air Marshal Aamir Masood stated that the broader defense package may also include Super Mushshak training aircraft, with the possibility of a limited number of JF-17 fighter jets being discussed. However, he cautioned that quantities and delivery schedules have not yet been confirmed.

Neither Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence nor the military’s media wing has issued an official statement on the reported agreement so far. Similarly, Sudanese military officials have not publicly commented on the ongoing discussions.

If concluded, the deal would represent a significant milestone for Pakistan’s defense industry, highlighting its growing role in the global arms export market while reinforcing military ties with African and Muslim-majority nations.
