Pakistan has unveiled its first-ever mobile van dedicated to thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder, aiming to provide easy access to screening and treatment for patients across the country.
Speaking at the inauguration, Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal highlighted the growing number of thalassemia cases in Pakistan. He noted that neglect by both authorities and society has contributed to the continued birth of children affected by this condition.
The minister emphasized the importance of premarital testing, particularly for men, as the risk of a child being born with severe thalassemia increases when both parents are carriers of the gene.
Thalassemia treatment mainly involves regular blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants. However, finding a compatible donor remains a major challenge, with only one match possible in every 50,000 people. To improve access to treatment, the government has removed prior approval requirements for bone marrow transplants, ensuring patients receive timely care.
Minister Kamal also mentioned ongoing efforts to make thalassemia testing mandatory before marriage, aiming to reduce the disease's prevalence over time.
Addressing public health challenges more broadly, he drew attention to difficulties faced during vaccination campaigns, such as polio, where misinformation can hinder efforts. He reminded parents that safeguarding children’s health, including protection from thalassemia, is a shared responsibility.
