The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) has issued a nationwide weather advisory, valid until January 29, warning of heavy snowfall, extreme cold, landslides, and avalanches in northern and upper regions of Pakistan.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, a severe cold wave will continue to affect most parts of the country. Islamabad is expected to remain cold and dry, while Punjab will experience cold winds across most districts.
In Murree, snowfall has stopped, but freezing temperatures will persist in Murree, the Galiyat, and nearby areas. Sindh will remain dry, although cold coastal winds are expected. Azad Kashmir will stay extremely cold, while Gilgit-Baltistan is likely to experience partly cloudy conditions.
NEOC stated that western weather systems are impacting upper regions. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, heavy snowfall is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with continued avalanche threats in upper parts of Balochistan.
The harsh weather has already caused serious disruptions. In Lower Chitral, an avalanche killed nine members of the same family, while one child was rescued alive.
In upper Azad Kashmir, including Neelum Valley, Bagh, and Sudhnoti, heavy snow has damaged homes, disrupted electricity, and blocked roads.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, key routes in Kaghan Valley, Upper Dir, Kumrat, Lowari Tunnel, and Shangla Top have been closed, and authorities have restricted tourist entry.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, snowfall and landslides have blocked the Karakoram Highway at multiple points, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded. Several regions, including Astore, are completely cut off.
In northern Balochistan, extreme cold has frozen water pipelines, creating severe hardship for residents.
The NDMA and provincial disaster authorities have placed all departments, rescue teams, and heavy machinery on high alert. Citizens have been urged to follow official advisories and use the NDMA Disaster Alert app for real-time updates.
