Municipal workers have announced their first major protest of 2026, demanding the payment of pending dues for retired employees, higher pensions, and the implementation of previously announced salary increases for serving staff.

The protest has been called by the Municipal Workers Trade Union Alliance and is scheduled to take place on January 20 outside the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) head office on MA Jinnah Road, according to local media reports.

Workers Accuse Govt, KMC of Breaking Promises

Speaking to reporters, Zulfiqar Shah, president of the Alliance, said the demonstration aims to highlight what he described as the failure of the Sindh government and KMC to fulfill commitments made to municipal employees.

He said workers have been waiting for months — in some cases years — for the release of retirement dues, pension adjustments, and salary increases that were officially announced but never implemented.

Formal Notices Issued

Shah confirmed that the Alliance has already served formal notices to both the Sindh government and the Karachi Municipal Corporation, informing them about the planned protest.

He added that municipal workers from across Sindh are expected to participate, making it the first large-scale labor action of the year.

Peaceful Protest Planned

The Alliance said the protest will remain peaceful but firm, stressing that workers are left with no option but to take to the streets due to continued delays and unfulfilled assurances.

Union leaders said municipal employees are seeking fair wages, timely pensions, and respect for their service, warning that further action could follow if demands are ignored.
