The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to install water flow meters in major cities under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cities Improvement Project, aiming to conserve water and strengthen monitoring systems.
According to the Local Government, Elections and Rural Development Department, the initiative will be implemented in Peshawar, Kohat, Abbottabad, and Mingora. Along with water meters, SCADA monitoring systems will be installed on tube wells, and old, rusted pipelines will be replaced.
Officials said the project is designed to:
Reduce non-revenue water losses
Control over-extraction of groundwater
Cut energy and operational costs
Improve water quality and supply reliability
Authorities warned that groundwater levels in all four cities are under serious stress due to population growth and climate change. Data from Water and Sanitation Services Companies shows that aquifers are shrinking rapidly and may soon fall below natural recharge levels.
Large-scale pipeline replacement is also part of the project, as outdated infrastructure has caused massive leakages, wastage, and poor supply—especially during peak summer months.
In many areas, water demand has already exceeded supply, forcing residents to depend on private borewells and water tankers. Excessive groundwater pumping has also dried up several tube wells, placing further strain on urban water systems.
Officials believe the new monitoring and conservation measures will help protect water resources and ensure sustainable supply for the future.
