The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has initiated formal consultations to restore student unions in higher education institutions across the province, marking a significant step toward reviving student representation and democratic engagement on campuses.

The development was discussed during a meeting chaired by Minister for Higher Education and Local Government, Mina Khan Afridi. The session was attended by senior officials from the Higher Education Department along with representatives of various student organizations, who reviewed proposals related to the revival of student unions.

Leaders from Islami Jamiat Talaba, Insaf Students Federation, Peoples Students Federation, Pakhtunkhwa Students Organization, and other student bodies presented their suggestions and shared views on how student unions could be restored in a structured and responsible manner.

During the meeting, participants approved the formation of a dedicated committee to finalize recommendations on the matter. The committee will be headed by Insaf Students Federation’s provincial president, Musharraf Afridi, and will include representatives from the Higher Education Department as well as members of different student organizations.

It was agreed that the committee would complete its work within 15 days and submit its recommendations at a follow-up meeting chaired by the higher education minister. The goal is to develop a consensus-based and practical framework that ensures the smooth and effective restoration of student unions.

Addressing the meeting, Minister Mina Khan Afridi said the provincial government is making serious efforts to reinstate student unions at the earliest. He emphasized that student unions play a crucial role in nurturing democratic values and developing capable leadership at both provincial and national levels.

The minister added that restoring student unions would help counter dynastic politics, feudal thinking, and the dominance of privileged groups, while providing young people with meaningful opportunities to participate in democratic processes.
