A tragic gas cylinder explosion ripped through a wedding house in Islamabad’s G-7/2 sector late Saturday night, killing at least eight people, including the bride and groom, and injuring 12 others, according to police and rescue officials.

The blast occurred at a wedding house located in 66 Quarters, Street No. 23, shortly after the wedding party arrived around 2:00 am. Police said the cylinder exploded soon after, causing a powerful blast that brought the building down.

Family Members Among the Dead

Authorities confirmed that six members of the same family lost their lives in the incident. The deceased include the bride, the groom, the groom’s mother, a maternal uncle, a paternal aunt, and a cousin. Two neighbouring residents were also killed, raising the overall death toll to eight.

Building Collapses, Nearby Houses Damaged

Police said the intensity of the explosion caused the entire wedding house to collapse, trapping several people under the rubble. In total, four houses were affected.

The roof of the wedding house was blown off, while the roofs of three neighbouring homes also collapsed, leaving multiple residents injured. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and shifted the injured and bodies to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and CDA Hospital.

Rescue Operation and Official Response

Additional Deputy Commissioner General Sahibzada Muhammad Yousaf said authorities received the first emergency call at 7:19 am. Police, CDA teams, and rescue workers reached the site immediately and sealed off the area.

Staff from the Building Control Department inspected nearby structures to assess damage and prevent further risk.

Later, CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa visited the site and said the rescue operation was nearing completion. He confirmed that a gas leak caused the explosion and stated that none of the injured were in critical condition, though one person was shifted to the Burn Centre.

Randhawa said the government would assist the affected families and noted that such incidents often increase during winter due to unsafe gas usage.

Hospitals Declare Emergency

At PIMS, Deputy Executive Director Dr Aneza Jalil said the hospital imposed an emergency after receiving the injured. She confirmed that two children were among those brought in.

Doctors provided treatment in the Orthopaedics, Burn, and Neuro departments, with most injuries caused by the collapsing roof. Hospital sources later confirmed that two injured victims died during treatment at CDA Hospital, bringing the final death toll to eight.

Safety Advisory Issued

Following the incident, rescue and safety officials urged citizens to regularly inspect gas cylinders, pipelines, and geysers, especially during winter.

They advised the public not to turn on electrical switches or light flames if they smell gas and to open doors and windows immediately in case of a suspected gas leak.

Prime Minister Orders Inquiry

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and offered condolences to the bereaved families. He directed health authorities to remain on alert and ensure the injured receive full medical care.

The prime minister also ordered the interior secretary to conduct a complete investigation and instructed the Islamabad administration to enhance public awareness regarding gas safety.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also expressed grief and directed officials to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured. He ordered a thorough inquiry and assured government support for the affected families.
