The federal government has banned the import of chloroform due to serious concerns related to public health and environmental safety, according to a report by 24News.

The decision was approved by the federal cabinet, after which the Ministry of Commerce issued an official notification to enforce the restriction.

Import Policy Amended

According to the notification, authorities have amended the Import Policy Order 2022, under which the import of chloroform has now been formally prohibited.

Officials said the step was taken to tighten controls on hazardous chemicals that pose risks if misused or handled without proper safeguards.

Limited Exemptions for Pharma Companies

Despite the ban, the government has allowed restricted exemptions for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Officials clarified that pharmaceutical companies may import chloroform only for essential production purposes.

However, such imports will be subject to strict conditions. Companies must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) before bringing the chemical into the country.

Aim to Prevent Misuse and Environmental Harm

Authorities said chloroform can cause serious health complications and environmental damage if improperly used. The ban is intended to prevent misuse, strengthen regulatory oversight, and ensure that hazardous substances are handled responsibly.

Officials added that the move is part of broader efforts to improve chemical safety standards and reduce environmental risks linked to dangerous industrial materials across the country.
