Several major motorways across Punjab have been temporarily closed after dense fog severely reduced visibility, prompting authorities to suspend traffic movement to ensure public safety.
According to the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), the closures were enforced after visibility dropped below safe driving levels, making travel extremely dangerous, particularly during late night and early morning hours.
Motorways Closed Due to Fog
The affected sections include:
M-2: Thokar Niaz Baig to Chakri
M-3: Faizpur to Samundri
M-4: Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad
M-11: Lahore to Sial Mor (near Sambrial)
M-14: Daud Khel to Isa Khel
Motorway Police officials said the decision was taken to prevent accidents, as thick fog significantly limits drivers’ visibility, in some cases reducing it to less than 50 meters.
Fog is a recurring winter issue in Punjab, especially in January, when cold air traps moisture and pollutants close to the ground — a condition known as temperature inversion.
Data from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) shows that fog-related conditions contribute to hundreds of road accidents each year, with over 200 crashes reported annually during severe fog spells.
Authorities have advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, use fog lights where permitted, maintain safe following distances, and stay updated through official traffic advisories.
The Motorway Police said all routes will be reopened once visibility improves and conditions become safe for travel.
