The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a final warning to hundreds of lawmakers who failed to submit their annual statements of assets and liabilities by the December 31 deadline, cautioning that non-compliance could lead to suspension from office.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the ECP revealed that 446 legislators, including members of the National Assembly, Senate, and all four provincial assemblies, did not file their mandatory asset declarations on time. The Commission has now granted them an extension until January 15, 2026, to fulfill the legal requirement.
According to the ECP, those who missed the deadline include 125 MNAs, 26 Senators, 159 Punjab Assembly members, 62 Sindh Assembly members, 48 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly members, and 26 lawmakers from Balochistan.
The submission of asset and liability statements is a compulsory obligation under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017. Lawmakers are required to disclose details of their personal assets as well as those owned by their spouses and dependent children. The declarations must reflect assets held up to June 30 of the previous financial year.
The Commission directed all defaulting lawmakers to submit their statements during official working hours before the new deadline. It warned that failure to comply will result in automatic suspension starting January 16, as mandated by law.
Last year, the ECP suspended 139 legislators for failing to submit asset declarations, barring them from attending parliamentary and assembly sessions until compliance was ensured.
Reiterating its stance, the Election Commission emphasized that timely asset disclosure is essential to promote transparency, accountability, and public trust in Pakistan’s democratic system.
