The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has banned the sale and use of several medicines after confirming that specific batches circulating in the market are counterfeit. The move comes as part of a nationwide campaign against fake and unlicensed pharmaceutical products.
According to DRAP officials, the action was taken after laboratory testing raised serious concerns about the authenticity of the medicines. The Central Drug Laboratory in Karachi and the Drug Testing Laboratory in Punjab found that certain batches failed quality and verification checks, prompting immediate “rapid alerts” across the country.
The banned products include Taskeen Dard tablets (Batch No. 091) and Pain-Nil tablets (Batch No. 01). Investigations revealed that these medicines were illegally manufactured and distributed by Leo Healthcare Lab and Hakeem Purana Dawakhana in Karachi. Both facilities were found to be operating without valid drug manufacturing licenses, making their products unlawful.
In a separate alert, DRAP also declared Batch No. 251986 of Duphalac syrup counterfeit. Although the fake product carries the name and address of Abbott Pharma Canada, the company has officially denied any link to the batch, confirming that it is not part of its genuine supply chain.
DRAP has warned that counterfeit medicines pose a serious threat to public health, as they can cause harm, delay proper treatment, and in some cases prove life-threatening. The authority has instructed enforcement teams to trace the supply network, remove the fake medicines from pharmacies and stores, and seize all identified batches.
Consumers are advised to remain cautious, verify medicines before use, and report any suspicious products to DRAP to help prevent the spread of fake drugs in Pakistan.
