Multiple motorway sections across Punjab and Sindh have been temporarily closed after dense fog severely reduced visibility, prompting safety concerns for commuters and transport operators. The closures were announced by the National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) as foggy conditions made driving extremely risky on major intercity routes.
According to officials, visibility in some areas dropped below 50 meters during late night and early morning hours, significantly increasing the likelihood of road accidents. As a precautionary measure, traffic was suspended on several key motorway stretches to prevent collisions and ensure public safety.
The affected routes include the M-1 (Peshawar to Swabi), M-2 (Islamabad to Lahore), M-3 (Faizpur to Jaranwala), M-4 (Gojra to Faisalabad), M-5 (Rohri to Rahim Yar Khan), and M-11 (Lahore to Sambrial). These motorways are among the busiest in the country, and their closure has caused delays for both passenger and freight traffic.
Fog is a recurring winter issue in Pakistan, particularly between December and February. Traffic authorities note that accident rates tend to rise sharply during heavy fog spells, making temporary road closures a necessary step during extreme weather conditions. Officials estimate that road accidents can increase by up to 30 percent when visibility deteriorates during dense fog.
The current wave of fog-related disruptions has affected more than 500 kilometers of highways since the start of January. While some improvement was reported on parts of the M-2 motorway on Tuesday morning, conditions continue to vary across different districts.
Motorists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during late night and early morning hours and to plan journeys during daylight when visibility is generally better. Drivers are also urged to follow traffic advisories, maintain safe distances, and use fog lights where required.
Authorities will continue to monitor weather conditions closely, and motorway sections will reopen once visibility improves and travel is deemed safe.
