AMD has officially announced the Ryzen 7 9850X3D at CES 2026, expanding its lineup of gaming-focused desktop processors. The new chip is a higher-binned version of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and is designed to deliver higher clock speeds while maintaining the benefits of AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology.

The processor had been the subject of several leaks in recent weeks, including references from OEM partners such as Dell, as well as mentions in AMD’s own materials ahead of the official reveal.

The Ryzen 7 9850X3D retains the same core configuration as its predecessor, featuring 8 cores and 16 threads, along with 96MB of L3 cache. This large cache has played a major role in the strong gaming performance seen across AMD’s X3D processors.

Thanks to improved binning, the new chip can reach boost clocks of up to 5.6GHz, compared to the 5.2GHz boost frequency of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Despite the increase in clock speed, the processor maintains the same 120W TDP, representing a nearly 8 percent gain in frequency without higher power consumption.

AMD is positioning the Ryzen 7 9850X3D as the fastest gaming CPU in its current lineup. While the 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D can boost up to 5.7GHz, that frequency applies to the compute die without the additional L3 cache. The die equipped with 3D V-Cache typically operates closer to 5.5GHz, allowing the 9850X3D to match or exceed it in clock-sensitive gaming workloads.

According to AMD’s internal benchmarks, gaming performance improvements over the 9800X3D range between 3 percent and 6 percent, depending on the title. Productivity workloads see a more modest uplift of around 5 percent. While the higher binning may offer limited overclocking headroom, AMD cautions that users should not expect dramatic gains beyond stock performance.

AMD has not yet announced official pricing for the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D currently sells for around $480, while the Ryzen 9 9900X3D and 9950X3D are priced at approximately $600 and $700, respectively. Based on this lineup, the new processor is expected to launch in the $500 to $600 range.

AMD also confirmed that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will remain in production and continue to be sold alongside the new model at its current price.
